Greetings other than 'How are you?'

This writing is aimed at continuing my previous writing entitled 'How are you?'

'How are you?' is a kind of greeting that we address people we met.

As a matter of fact, there are other kinds of greeting commonly known among native speaker.

Some expressions below are some of them:

'how's life?'

'how's life treating you today?'

'what's up?'

'how have you been?' (from Yori)

'how's life there?' (from Yori)

Addition for other kinds of greetings will be welcomed here

How are you?

What will you say when someone say 'How are you?'

I am quite certain you will respond 'fine' and sometimes you will also say 'how about you' and

sometimes you don't

It is commonly known that from elementary school to university what Indonesian students have

learned about greeting is only the expression 'how are you'

no wonder when another expression is introduced, they will face difficulty in giving a good

response

in their mind, there is no response for some expressions such as

'how's life?'

'how is it going?'

'how's life treating you?'

'what's up'

The provement for this fact can be found in my classes

whenever I greet them by using expression other than 'how are you?'

they will keep silent

and when I repeat my greeting 'how are you?'

they will give a quick response

'fine'

Fiuu......... what a student

Cheating

About two weeks two to go, we are going to have final exam in Polytechnic of Agriculture

A regular event after 6 months of lecture

Instead of being happy having finished my job as a lecturer, I become more alert

do you know why?

The reason is................

At that time, I will become like a guard of many prisoners

and my prisoners will be my own students

The crime they do at that time will be .................... CHEATING

believe it or not most of my students are cheating in exam

it has become such a silly tradition

It is very ironic for diploma students to cheat actually

but it happens, and it is about 99,5% of them do that

There are several ways have been carried out

from giving motivation, threatening by religion rules, reminding to their parents for being

ashamed of knowing their deed

but, it doesn't work at all

They don't feel ashamed of doing that 'dirty job'

They've got no morality

I was wondering what will happen to this country when the young generation do not have ability

to show who they are, only depending on other people's work

No wonder, our country nowadays is having so many corruptors

it was begun from the tradition so called 'cheating'

Intermezzo

There is always some funny things happened in my class while teaching

Now, I will tell you some of them

When I open my class, I will say Good morning or Good Afternoon or any other greetings

and after that I will ask how they are doing

They will always answer,'fine mom......' eventhough I've varied my way of responding to their

greeting

One day, I said 'Afternoon class'

They answered, 'Afternoon mom....'

but one student, busy taking out her books from her bag answer with a quite loud voice

'fine mom........'

Every body then laughed

A Day in Discussion Class

Today my students are having a discussion or a debate on pop culture

They are divided into two groups

The first group will agree that pop culture should be imitated

Another group should not agree with that idea

It is hoped that they will acquire the skill of presenting paper, arguing and defend their argument

Most of them is not really confident because of their grammar but some of them is very gung ho

Some tried to speak English eventhough it needs lots of energy

they ran out of oxygen after speaking :)

Thinking about concept and the language used to convey

the concept are very exhausting

But it worth trying

The conclusion, some classes were dynamic and others stressed out

Anyway, it is not really effective for some classes but quite effective for other classes
